Hugo Returns Home For Shot At Olympic Team
UNLV junior Jonathan Hugo will compete this week for a spot on the 2004 South African Olympic team.
by: Doug Layne April 15, 2004 LAS VEGAS - UNLV swimmer Jonathan Hugo left this week to compete in the 2004 South African Olympic Trials at the Kings Park pool in Durban, South Africa. Hugo, a junior from Claremont, South Africa will be returning home for the first time in three years to compete in the meet, which begins on Friday. Hugo will be competing in both the 50-m and 100-m freestyle events, as well as the 100-m backstroke. The UNLV coaching staff says that Hugo's times place him in approximately the top six swimmers in South Africa, and that he has a legitimate shot at making the team. Hugo will need to finish amongst the top two swimmers in order to qualify for an individual event, and amid the top four to qualify for the 4x100-m freestyle relay team. This will be Hugo's second attempt at Olympic glory, as he attended the trials for the 2000 Olympic team. In the 2000, Hugo finished fifth in the 100-m backstroke and sixth in the 200-m backstroke. During Hugo's 2002-03 season as a Rebel, he was named Mountain West Conference swimmer of the year and competed in the NCAA Championships. He set the school and conference-record in the 50-m freestyle with a time of 19.74 and took 22nd at the NCAA Championships in 19.92 seconds. Hugo's other best times include finishing the 100-m free with a 44:13 and a time of 48:34 in the 100-m backstroke.
At the 2004 MWC Championships, held earlier this year in Oklahoma City, OK, Hugo was a member of the MWC record-setting 4x200 relay team who finished with a time of 1:19.74.
