Wyoming Men's Swimming Team Receives Academic All-America Honors
UW achieved a team grade-point average of 2.91.
April 10, 2003 Laramie, Wyo. - The College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) recently announced its Academic All-America Swimming Teams for the 2002 fall semester, and the University of Wyoming men's swimming team was one of 170 teams nationally to be so honored. The UW men's swimming team achieved a team grade-point average of 2.91 during the 2002 fall semester. The CSCAA recognizes Academic All-America teams in three categories: 1. Commendable, 2.80 gpa or higher; 2. Excellent, 3.00 gpa or better; and 3. Superior, 3.25 gpa or higher. Wyoming received recognition in the commendable category. "We are very proud of our team's academic success," said UW head swimming coach Tom Johnson. "We strive to have the same success in the pool as we have in the classroom. "With the demands our student-athletes are under in the sport of swimming -- going to early morning practices five days a week -- it makes this accomplishment even more rewarding. It is also a great tribute to the work ethic of our young men due to the fact that they are pursuing very challenging careers -- studying engineering, business, the sciences, as well as a number of other difficult and time-consuming subjects."
To qualify for the honor, the CSCAA requires that the grade-point average of a school's entire swimming and diving squad average at least a 2.80 gpa on a 4.00 scale.
