SALT LAKE CITY -
University of Utah senior Sterling Richards became the first Ute diver ever to earn first-team All-America status by placing sixth in the preliminary session of the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships today in Atlanta. Richards will compete in the 1-meter finals tonight at Georgia Tech's Olympic Pool. Eight divers qualified for finals, led by Arizona State's Joona Puhakka with a 389.30.

Richards, of Woods Cross, Utah (Woods Cross HS), has also qualified for the 3-meter competition, which begins tomorrow. A three-time Mountain West Conference champion on the 3-meter board (2004-06), Richards also won the MWC 1-meter title this year after runner-up finishes his sophomore and junior seasons.
