LARAMIE, Wyo. -

Wyoming senior diver Kevin Bretting will be making history this weekend as he becomes just the fifth Cowboy diver in UW history to compete in the NCAA Championship meet, this weekend at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center in Minneapolis, Minn.

Bretting, a native of Loveland, Colo., will be competing among a national field of the 35 best divers in the country. He will compete in all three diving events including the one-meter event on Thursday, the three-meter on Friday and the platform on Saturday. Bretting is the first Cowboy diver to compete in the NCAA Championships since the 1998-99 season when Oscar Delgado competed for the Pokes.

"Honestly, it is just an honor to compete in this meet with the 35 best divers in the country," said UW diving coach Ben Herdt. "Kevin is doing some of the best diving I have ever seen him do and this is the perfect time to peak like that. He is very relaxed and excited to get going tomorrow afternoon. I am very proud of Kevin for being here, excited to see what he can accomplish, and thrilled about the huge step this is for our program."

Bretting qualified for the championships by placing eighth in the three-meter event at the NCAA Zone "E" Diving Championships two weeks ago.

Bretting has had a spectacular career as a Cowboy both athletically and academically. Athletically, he has been selected as an All-Mountain West Conference diver five times in his career and ranks in the top-three of all three diving events in UW history. Academically, he was named ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District VII in 2006 and has been named a MWC Scholar Athlete and an Academic All-Conference selection every year of his career.

At the championships, each day's preliminary competition will begin at 1:15 p.m. (MST) and will be immediately followed by the consolation finals. Each day's finals will begin at 6 p.m.
