Y. Athlete Fills 'Doctor' Role The Deseret News Feature Story

By Dick Harmon PROVO, Utah - Billy Betz is perhaps best known as a Brigham Young University swimmer who helped set school and conference relay records. What's not so well known is the adventures he's seen during service trips to foreign lands. Betz, from Logan, has spent the past two summers volunteering in an El Salvador health clinic. He's risked his life and even performed emergency procedures on patients - not because he knew how but because he had to. Last summer, Betz and longtime friend Brent Skinner, a student at Utah State University, paid $1,000 for a run-down van, loaded it with used medical equipment donated by hospitals in central Utah and drove 3,100 miles in eight days through three countries to El Salvador, where they spent five weeks helping the disadvantaged.
