Nominees Announced For Senior Recognition Award at MWC Swimming & Diving Championships Winners to be announced Saturday, March 2.
Feb. 27, 2002 OKLAHOMA CITY - Ten candidates were placed on the ballot for the inaugural Mountain West Conference Swimming & Diving Senior Recognition Awards. MWC coaches nominate and cast votes for the league's top senior male and female swimmer or diver who have exemplified outstanding leadership, competitive spirit and academic achievement throughout their respective collegiate careers. The Senior Recognition Award winners will be announced Saturday, Mar. 2 at the conclusion of the Mountain West Conference Swimming & Diving Championships along with the following individual honors (men and women): First Team All-Conference, Second Team All-Conference, Swimmer of the Year, Diver of the Year, Swimming Coach of the Year and Diving Coach of the Year. Preliminary action is underway at the 2002 Mountain West Conference Swimming & Diving Championships. Results from the finals will be released at the conclusion of each day's events. MWC Senior Recognition Award Candidates - Men:
A participant at the 2000 World Championships for Ecuador, Delgado holds the school record in platform diving and currently ranks fourth in the MWC in the 1-meter. Delgado qualified for the NCAA Zone Diving Championships three straight years.
An Olympic Trials (2000) participant, Horner serves as team captain and has been an integral part of the Falcon squad this season despite competing with a torn rotator cuff. He ranks fourth in the 200 IM, 400 IM and 200 back this season. The school record holder in the 200-yard backstroke, Horner posted three top five finishes in last year's MWC Championships. Ranks 62 of 954 among 2002 USAFA graduates.
A participant at the Asia Pacific Games in Malaysia (1997-98), Patil is a conference champion in platform diving. A Cougar Club Scholar Athlete, Patil ranks in the MWC top five for the 1- and 3-meter diving events this season.
An Olympic Trials qualifier and two-time All-American, Short is a member of three Rebels relay teams that set MWC Championship records and he ranks in the MWC top five in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly. A six-time Dean's List honoree, Short also earned recognition as a Collegiate Swim Coaches Team Award member for excellence in academics. MWC Senior Recognition Award Candidates - Women:
Busby earned a spot on the Cougars' conference team this year, showing tremendous improvement in her final year. After struggling early in her college career, head coach Stan Crump modified Busby's training regimen and she now ranks in the MWC top 20 in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events this season.
Carlaw is ranked in the MWC top 10 for the 100-yard butterfly, 100-yard freestyle and 200-yard individual medley this season. She placed in the top four in those events in last year's MWC Championships and was a member of the first-place 200-yard freestyle relay team.
A two-time Academic All-MWC selection, DeFelice broke a 21-year-old school record in the 50-yard freestyle this season and ranks fifth on the MWC list for the 50 free and the 200-yard breaststroke. She also holds the Aztec record in the 100-yard breaststroke, set at last year's MWC Championships, and was a member of the record setting 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relay teams for SDSU.
A two-time Olympian, Diaconescu holds MWC records in the 100-, 200- and 500-yard freestyle events. The two-time All-American earned MWC Swimmer of the Year the past two seasons and has captured a total of six individual conference titles and has been a member of four championship relay teams. She also won the 100 free at the 2001 World University Games.
A two-time Colorado Sports Woman of the Year honoree, Law has excelled in a number of areas at the Academy. She became the first Mountain West Conference women's champion for the Falcons in any sport after setting a league record in the platform and capturing the 1-meter diving events at last year's championships. She earned Academic All-MWC and Dean's List honors and is being considered for several leadership positions in the Cadet Wing.
Described by head coach Bill Spahn as "the heart and soul of the New Mexico swimming program the past four years," Michie is the Lobo record holder in the 200-yard individual medley and was a medal winner in the same event as a sophomore at the 2000 MWC Championships. A team co-captain, Michie serves as Vice President of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee and is President of the Lettermans Club at New Mexico.
