BYU Leads After Three Days at Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Championships UNLV remains in second place with one day remaining. (2/18)
Feb. 18, 2000 OKLAHOMA CITY, OK - After three days of competition at the inaugural Mountain West Conference Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Championships, BYU continues to hold first place in both the men's and women's races. The championships are being held at the Aquatic Center on the campus of Oklahoma City Community College. The BYU men have accumulated 549 points, 61 better than second-place UNLV. Air Force is in third place at 414, followed by Utah (360) and Wyoming (346). On the women's side, BYU (507) has a 60.50 edge over UNLV (446.50) heading into the final day of competition. Colorado State is in third with 379 points, followed by Utah (307), Wyoming (292), San Diego State (207), New Mexico (180.50) and Air Force (153). Damian Storz, a freshman out of Wyoming, placed first in the men's 400-Yard Individual Medley with his final time of 3:55.90. Utah senior Jon Wright came in second with 3:58.99, while Air Force Academy junior Josh Finch placed third at 4:00.54. Dana Penn, a sophomore from UNLV, led the women in the 400-Yard Individual Medley, finishing in 4:27.28. San Diego State freshman Erin Kilpatrick came in second at 4:28.11, just ahead of Wyoming freshman Darcrea Corey at 4:28.65. Utah standout Heidi Hausknecht, a junior, earned the top spot in the women's 100-Yard Butterfly with 54.93, as CSU senior Patty Nash closed in fast for second with 55.46. Wyoming freshman Angie Sax placed third with 55.87. UNLV sophomore David Schick placed first in the men's 100-Yard Butterfly with 48.35. Utah senior Matt Chamberlain came in a close second at 48.72, while Michael Short, a sophomore from UNLV, ended third with 48.93. UNLV sophomore Lorena Diaconescu landed out front in the women's 200-Yard Freestyle with her final time of 1:46.92. Sandy Leaycraft, a junior from CSU, placed second at 1:51.86, while Utah junior Erin Blundell came in third with 1:52.39. Jacint Simon, a UNLV sophomore, held the lead in the men's 200-Yard Freestyle, finishing in 1:37.08. Utah senior Johan Nystrom followed with 1:39.01, and BYU's Robert Morris, a junior, came in third with 1:39.57. In the women's 100-Yard Breaststroke, BYU freshman Amanda Grant took first with 1:04.52, as UNLV sophomore Erika Korb came in second by a breath at 1:04.66. Nicole Ryan, a CSU senior, was a close third at 1:04.73. Bobby Middleton, a senior from UNLV, placed first in the men's 100-Yard Breaststroke at 54.82. AFA junior Matt Ihlenfeld finished second with 55.29 and BYU freshman Drew Watkins took third with 55.88. SDSU sophomore Meghan Casillan earned the top time in the 100-Yard Backstroke with 56.77, as Ashleigh Crowder, a junior from UNLV, came in with 57.17. Another Aztec, junior Mariana Luevano, finished third at 57.80. Arunas Savickas, a junior at BYU, led the men in the 100-Yard Backstroke with 48.38. UNLV's David Schick placed second with 50.29 and BYU freshman Gary Tan landed third with 50.77. In the 3-Meter Springboards, BYU senior Rachelle Smith Kunkel earned the top score of 512.65 as Utah sophomore Crystal Gregory claimed second with 487.15. Third place went to Anna Tutunnikova, BYU sophomore, for her finals score of 476.55. The women's 800-Yard Freestyle Relay went to the UNLV team, which ended with a time of 7:30.84. CSU came in second with a final score of 7:37.79, and BYU took a close third at 7:38.75.
BYU men claimed the 800-Yard Freestyle Relay with 6:35.45, followed by UNLV at 6:38.16 and Utah with 6:46.69.
