UNLV Swimmers Gear Up For MWC Meet Young rosters year away from real contention.
Feb. 17, 2004
By Jeff Wollard LAS VEGAS - UNLV swimming coach Jim Reitz was reluctant to make any predictions about his freshmen-laden teams when the season began in October. Five months later, he's still on the fence. Entering the Mountain West Conference Championships, which are Wednesday through Saturday at Oklahoma City, things look just as uncertain for the Rebels. With 25 freshmen on his rosters (13 men, 12 women), Reitz hopes his young squads will parlay their limited experience into a championship performance. "I think this team will develop into a great team," said Reitz, in his 24th season at UNLV. "We just need to be able to get up when it counts to pull off some improbable victories." The regular season was largely disappointing for Reitz, whose Rebels suffered several losses by narrow margins.
