BYU Continues to Lead at Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Championships UNLV surges into second place after second day of competition. (2/17)

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK - The Brigham Young University men's and women's swimming and diving teams continue to lead at the Mountain West Conference Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Championships, but UNLV has surged into second place following the second day of competition. The four-day event is being held at the Aquatic Center on the campus of Oklahoma City Community College. The BYU men have a 76-point lead over second-place UNLV, followed by Air Force (214), Utah (212) and Wyoming (199). The Rebels began the day in fourth place. On the women's side, the Cougars are in first with 261 points, followed by UNLV at 239.50. Colorado State is third with 201, followed by Utah (172), Wyoming (153), New Mexico (110.50), Air Force (95) and San Diego State (74). UNLV sophomore Lorena Diaconescu took first place in the 500-Yard Freestyle with a time of 4:49.50. Sandy Leaycraft, a junior at CSU, placed second in the event with 4:58.57, while Dana Penn, a sophomore from UNLV, ranked third with a final time of 4:59.97. In the men's 500 Yard Freestyle, UNLV sophomore Jacint Simon earned first with 4:21.91. BYU junior Arunas Savickas came in second with 4:22.76, and Jon Wright, a senior from Utah, took third with 4:30.74. UNLV captured another first place in the 200-Yard Individual Medleys, with sophomore Erika Korb taking first with 2:05.23. BYU junior Mary Duffin closed in for second with 2:05.70, while UNM sophomore Quinn Michie rounded out third-place with 2:06.83. David Schick, UNLV sophomore, took first place in the men's 200-Yard Individual Medley with 1:50.99. Utah senior Matt Chamberlain gained second with 1:51.39 and Wyoming junior Al Jarrell placed third at 1:52.26. The women's 50-Yard Freestyle event was captured by Utah junior Heidi Hausknect with a final time of 23.50. BYU senior Jann Pickens earned second place with 23.59 and Kelly Goddard, a junior from UNLV, placed third at 23.86. For the men, Garrett Wood, UNLV junior, secured first in the event with 20.31. Charlie Toth, a junior at the Air Force Academy, placed second with 20.36. UNLV sophomore Piotr Krzyskow took third with 20.48. In men's 3-Meter Diving action, BYU senior Devan Porter stood out with a final score of 502.05. Wyoming sophomore Oscar Delgado earned second with 495.85 and BYU freshman Scott Randall took third with 494.70. The final event of the evening, the 400-Yard Medley Relay, was again swept by UNLV. The women's team finished with a final time of 3:46.57, with BYU in second at 3:49.23. CSU's captured third with 3:49.51. UNLV men earned first, as well, with a final finish of 3:17.57. BYU followed with 3:20.32, and AFA rounded out the top three with 3:21.73.
Competition continues tomorrow through Saturday in Oklahoma City, Okla.
