Feb. 2, 2000
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - BYU's Arunas Savickas and Aaron Russell have been named the Mountain West Conference's Men's Swimmer and Diver of the Week, respectively, for their performances last weekend. Savickas, a junior from Panevezys, Lithuania, earned first-place in all three events he competed in as the Cougars defeated rival Utah 148.5-75.5. He surpassed his own season and conference top time with a mark of 1:38.84 in the 200 Free. With altitude considerations factored in, Savickas' time of 4:28.65 in the 500 Free was an NCAA-qualifying time and over 19 seconds faster than the runner-up finisher. He was also part of the 200 Medley Relay team which posted a season-best time of 1:33.14. A freshman from Provo, Utah, Russell captured first-place in the 3-Meter competition at the BYU Diving Invitational this past weekend. The event consisted of divers from BYU, Air Force and Utah. He claimed first with a score of 540.65. Russell also placed third in the 1-Meter competition with a score of 472.3.
Last Week's Honorees: UNLV's Michael Short.
