Feb. 1, 2006 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - BYU's Brett Allen and Utah's Sterling Richards have been named the Mountain West Conference Men's Swimmer and Diver of the Week, respectively. Allen earns his third honor of the season and his career. Meanwhile, Richards picks up his fifth honor this year and his eighth career weekly award. Allen, a junior from Houston, Texas, won four individual events and two relays in dual meets at Air Force and Wyoming last week. In BYU's win over Air Force, he won the 50-yard freestyle (21.25) and the 100-yard freestyle (45.44). In addition, he was a member of the victorious 400-yard freestyle relay team (3:05.12). Against Wyoming (Jan. 28), he broke three Corbett Pool records including his leg of the 200-yard medley relay (1:30.75), the 100 free (45.15) and the 50 free (20.17). The 50-free record had stood since 1979. Richards, a senior from Salt Lake City, Utah, won both the 1-meter and 3-meter events at the Air Force Diving Invitational last weekend. Richards led the field from the preliminaries through the finals in the 3-meter event. The senior scored 363.85 points in the prelims, with 18 divers competing overall. Richards then scored 357.50 points in the finals to beat out the top eight finishers for the victory. In the 1-meter, Richards tallied 339.25 points. Richards' win in the 3-meter also helped the men's team beat Wyoming with his results in the 3-meter sealing the Utes' win over the Cowboys.
