Jan. 29, 2004 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State freshman Stella Karoly and Wyoming freshman Saara Haapanen have been named Mountain West Conference Women's Swimmer and Diver of the Week, respectively. Karoly, a Kapolei, Hawaii, product, earned her first career weekly accolade by bringing home three individual wins and a second and third place individual finish last week, setting five personal best times in the process. She also was a part of two relay wins. In the Aztec victory over Loyola Marymount on Jan. 23, she opened the meet helping the 200 medley relay squad to a win (1:51.79) and followed with wins in the 100 butterfly (58.55) and 200 individual medley (2:09.80), both personal best times. The next day in a win over Pepperdine, Karoly led the 400 medley relay quartet to a first-place finish (4:02.68), then swam personal best times in the 400 individual medley (4:36.42), the 100 freestyle (53.99, second-place finish), and the 200 butterfly (2:09.01, third-place finish) to complete her meet.
Haapanen won three of four board events last week against Utah and BYU en route to qualifying for the 2004 NCAA Zone "E" Diving Championships in both the 1-meter and 3-meter events. Against Utah, she recorded a career-best score of 269.73 in the 1-meter, the fifth highest total in school history, to qualify for the Championships. She also qualified for the 3-meter, scoring 272.63 and placing second. Against BYU she turned in victories in both events, scoring 255.38 in the 1-meter and 267.00 in the 3-meter.
