MWC Men's Swimmer And Diver Of The Week UNLV's Johan Claar and TCU's R.J. Hesselberg earn weekly honors.
Jan. 11, 2006 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - UNLV's Johan Claar and TCU's R.J. Hesselberg have been named the Mountain West Conference Men's Swimmer and Diver of the Week, respectively. Claar earns his third swimmer of the week accolade, while Hesselberg picks up his first career award. Claar, a freshman from Bankeryd, Sweden, won all five of his races last week. The five wins gives him 19 wins out of 20 swims this season, including in 18 consecutive events. Against Wyoming, he won the 1,000-yard freestyle in a time of 9:17.82, setting a new school record and posting the second-fastest time in the MWC this season, and under the previous MWC record. He also won the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 4:30.70. At the UC Irvine Sprint Invitational, he won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:42.22 and the 200-yard butterfly by over six seconds, in a time of 1:52.89. He also won the 1,000 free in 9:33.31. Hesselberg, a freshman from Saskatoon, Sask., picked up his first career victory at the UC Irvine Diving Invitational by placing first on the 3-meter board at the event. He posted a career-best score of 282.00 to defeat six other divers, including teammate Kelly McCain (256.45), who placed second.
