Mountain West Conference Swimmers and Divers of the Week Wyoming sweeps men's and women's honors.
Jan. 10, 2007 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Wyoming swept both the men's and women's Mountain West Conference Swimmers and Divers of the Week as sophomore Alex Larkin and senior John Lynch earned the men's awards and sophomore Krista Jones and senior Saara Haapanen were honored on the women's side. Larkin, a native of Bend, Ore., won the sprint invitational title in the 200 breaststroke with a 2:08.12, which is the eighth-best time in the MWC this season. He also placed second in both the 50 and 100 breast events in 26.61 and 57.81, respectively. In Sunday's relays invite, Larkin swam on two third-place relays, the 3x100 breast and the 400 medley. Lynch won both diving events in a three-team diving dual against TCU and Trinity University last Friday. The San Antonio, Texas, native dove to a first-place score of 328.25 in the three-meter dive and won the one-meter event with a 287.75. His three-meter score marked the fourth time this season he reached the NCAA Zone qualifying mark. Jones, from Loveland, Colo., turned in a career-best time of 17:40.54 in the 1650 freestyle at the UC Irvine Invite, shaving more than 30 seconds off her previous personal best. That time placed her second at the meet, which was her highest career finish in an invite, while also ranking as the 10th-best time in the league this season. Jones turned in another career best with a 1:02.91 in the 100 backstroke. She finished eighth in the 200 back (2:16.14) and 13th in the 50 back (29.98), while swimming in five relays on the weekend to lead the Cowgirls to the UC Irving Relay team championship. Haapanen won the one-meter dive and finished second in the three-meter event to lead the Cowgirls at a three team diving dual against TCU and Trinity University. The Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada, native on the one-meter with a personal best score of 294.80, which ranks as the second highest score in Wyoming diving history. Haapanen then dove to a second-place score of 258.20 in the three-meter event.
