Cowboy Scott Usher Places Second in Semi Finals of 200 Breaststroke at US Olympic Trials

Sunday's finals to determine 2004 Olympic participants in the event.

LONG BEACH, Calif. -

University of Wyoming junior Scott Usher finished second in the semi finals of the 200 meter breaststroke Saturday night at the 2004 US Olympic trials in Long Beach, Calif.

Usher, a Grand Island, Neb. native, swam to a second place time of 2:13.19 in the event. Brendan Hansen of the University of Texas earned the number one seed with a new meet record time of 2:10.76. Mark Gangloff (2:13.99), Gary Marshall (2:14.60) and Ed Moses (2:15.00) rounded out the top five.

Usher also placed second in this morning's preliminary competition with a time of 2:15.27. Hansen swam the fastest preliminary race as he finished in 2:13.08.

"Scott really swam his race tonight, he was very strong and totally in control," said UW head coach Tom Johnson. "He swam like a million bucks, he was extremely long and very smooth.

"I think that Hansen will be right there to set a new world record tomorrow night and hopefully Scott can be right there with him.

"I hope that Wyoming fans will tune in tomorrow night, cheer him on and see if we can bring home an Olympian."

In order to earn a trip to the 2004 Olympic Games, Usher must finish second in the finals of tomorrow night's 200 meter breaststroke. The finals are set to begin at 6 p.m. (MST) and will be televised live on NBC. The 200 breaststroke is the first of seven events that will be swam tomorrow night.
