Scott Usher Earns Spot on 2005 U.S. World Championship Team
World Championships to run July 24-31 in Montreal.

LARAMIE, Wyo. - University of Wyoming senior Scott Usher earned a spot on the 2005 United States World Championship Team by finishing second in the 200-meter breaststroke at the World Championship Trials, Tuesday evening in Indianapolis, Ind. Usher, a native of Grand Island, Neb., touched the wall in a second place time of 2:13.46. Fellow Olympian and World Record holder in both breaststroke events, Brendan Hansen, won today's race in a time of 2:10.20. Kevin Swander, of Indiana University, rounded out the top-three with a time of 2:15.84. Usher swam the fourth fastest opening 50-meters in the final heat with a time of 30.64. He moved into second place after the first turn and finished the first 100-meters in a time of 1:04.65. He held on to second place and finished the third length in a time of 1:38.70, before touching the wall in his second place time of 2:13.46. Usher tied with Swander for the seventh fastest preliminary race this morning, as he touched in at a time of 2:18.30. "Scott set up his race perfectly tonight," said UW head coach Tom Johnson. "He had a nice, long smooth stroke throughout the race and did a great job of not rushing. He was in fourth place after the first 50-meters and moved into second place by the second turn and never looked back. "We will take a couple of weeks off to catch our breath, but will get back to work very soon to get ready for the World Championships. It will be really nice to have a lot of time to put all of our focus on one meet so he can go in there and try to get a medal." The 2005 World Championships will be held in Montreal, Canada from July 24-31.
