Usher Finishes Sixth in the 100-meter Breaststroke at the World Championship Trials
The 200-meter breaststroke event remains for UW senior on Tuesday.

LARAMIE, Wyo. - University of Wyoming senior Scott Usher placed sixth in the 100-meter breaststroke, Friday night at the 2005 World Championship Trials in Indianapolis, Ind. Usher, a native of Grand Island, Neb., swam to a sixth place time of 1:02.33. He missed qualifying for the championships by less than one second. Fellow Olympians Brendan Hansen and Mark Gangloff earned a birth to the 2005 World Championships in Montreal, Canada by finishing in the top-two of the race. Hansen, the World Record holder in the event, won today's race in a time of 1:00.13. Gangloff finished second with a time of 1:01.36. In this morning's preliminaries, Usher swam the fifth best time in the field by touching in at a time of 1:02.13. "I think he got caught trying a little too hard in tonight's final," said UW head coach Tom Johnson. "He started the race out a little too hard and I think that hurt him down the stretch. He looked great and swam a smooth, easy race this morning so that was a positive we need to build on. We just need to get ready for the 200 on Tuesday and if he comes out and swims his race we should have a good shot of qualifying." Usher will have one more shot at qualifying for the championships when he swims his speciality event, the 200-meter breaststroke, on Tuesday. Cowgirl freshman Lindsey Russenberger will swim the 100-meter breaststroke on Sunday and a time trial in the 200-meter breaststroke on Tuesday.
