Final Results

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - The UNLV men claimed their second straight MWC championship, while Utah's women's team won its first championship as members of the league at the Mountain West Conference Swimming & Diving Championships tonight at Oklahoma City Community College. The Rebel men finished with 763 points, followed by BYU (618), Air Force (526), Wyoming (520), Utah (513) and TCU (489). The Ute women tallied 679.50 points, besting second-place BYU (608.50). UNLV finished third in women's action with 587 points, followed by TCU (414), Wyoming (404.50), Colorado State (371.50), New Mexico (285), Air Force (206) and San Diego State (176).

Eight new Mountain West Conference records and nine MWC championship records were set at this year's meet. New men's all-time records include the 100-yard freestyle (Joe Bartoch, UNLV [43.63]), 100-yard butterfly (Joe Bartoch, UNLV [47.12]) and the 400-yard individual medley (Chris Knaute, Air Force [3:49.33]).

The new women's all-time records were the 200-yard medley relay (Utah - 1:42.21) and freestyle relay (Utah - 1:32.47), 400 medley relay (BYU - 3:43.49), 100-yard butterfly (Angela Goodson, BYU [54.13]) and 100-yard breaststroke (Amber Walter, Utah [1:01.92]).

MWC Swimming & Diving Championships Notes:

  • Utah junior Andrew Cole (Newport Beach, Calif.) set a Utah school record in the preliminary round of the 200-yard backstroke with a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 1:45.96. The previous Ute record was 1:45.97 by Jim Giottonini in 1993.
  • BYU junior Brett Allen provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 100-yard freestyle preliminaries with a time of 43.84, setting a BYU all-time mark in the process.
  • Air Force junior Chris Knaute (Houston, Texas) won his third straight men's 1650-yard (mile) freestyle with a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 15:16.30.
  • Utah junior Rachael Curci won her second 1650-yard freestyle title in three years in a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 16:49.77.

  • BYU junior Brittany Davis (Magna, Utah) won her third consecutive women's 200-yard backstroke individual title in 1:58.90, a NCAA provisional time.
  • UNLV senior Joe Bartoch broke the conference all-time mark in the men's 100-yard freestyle, clocking in with a provisional time of 43.63.
  • BYU's Leilani Roberts became the first freshman in MWC history to win the 100-yard freestyle individual title, doing so in a NCAA provisional time of 50.42.
  • Wyoming freshman Alex Larkin won the 200-yard breaststroke crown in a NCAA provisional time of 1:59.40. His victory marked the fifth straight year that a Cowboy swimmer has won the 200 breaststroke title. Former Cowpoke Scott Usher (2002-2005) won the race the four previous championships.
  • Wyoming junior Ron Fogel won the 200-yard butterfly title (1:48.19) after finishing second in the 2004 and 2005 championship.
  • Air Force junior Brady Lindberg captured the men's platform diving championship with a provisional score of 332.60.
  • Utah's Kelsey Patterson claimed the women's platform individual title with a provisional mark of 285.95.
  • The UNLV men won their fifth 400-yard freestyle relay title in seven years in a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 2:56.96.
  • Utah won its first MWC title in the 400-yard freestyle relay, provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Championships in the process, in a Utah program record time of 3:23.79.
