2006 MWC Swimming & Diving Championships Hit Home Stretch with UNLV Men and Utah Women in the Lead BYU trails the Rebels in men's action with 410 points, followed by Air Force (360), Utah (356), Wyoming (349) and TCU.
Feb. 24, 2006 OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Defending men's champion UNLV took over the lead in the men's field with 509 points, while Utah continues to lead the women with 458 points after day three at the Mountain West Conference Swimming & Diving Championships at Oklahoma City Community College.
BYU trails the Rebels in men's action with 410 points, followed by Air Force (360), Utah (356), Wyoming (349) and TCU. The Cougars hold the No. 2 spot in the women's events with 393 points, followed by UNLV (386), TCU (295), Wyoming (294.50), Colorado State (255.50), New Mexico (205), Air Force (134) and San Diego State (127).
The MWC Swimming & Diving Championships conclude Saturday, Feb. 25, following the 6 p.m. finals events and the announcement of the individual and team awards.
MWC Swimming & Diving Championships Notes:
· BYU sophomore Angela Goodson set a new Mountain West Conference and BYU school all-time record in the preliminary round of the women's 100-yard butterfly with a provisional qualifying time of 54.13. The previous record was 54.58 by Heidi Hausknecht (Utah) and was set at the 2001 MWC Championship. Goodson went on to win the 100 butterfly individual title later on in the evening in 54.49, also a provisional time.
· Air Force junior Chris Knaute set a new Mountain West Conference and Falcon school record time of 3:49.33 in the 400-yard individual medley, provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Championships in the process. Knaute held the previous two records, both set in the 2005 championship.
· UNLV senior Joe Bartoch broke his own conference and school all-time mark as he successfully defended his 100-yard butterfly title in a NCAA automatic qualifying time of 47.12.
· Utah junior Amber Walter set a new MWC and Utah school all-time record in the women's 100-yard breaststroke in a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 1:01.92. The previous conference record was set by BYU's Jennifer Tasker (1:02.40) in 2001, while the previous Ute all-time mark was held by Tessa Greegor (1:02.88) and was set in 2003.
· TCU sophomore Jonathon Berrettini captured the men's 100-yard backstroke individual title school record time of 48.90. · TCU sophomore Kelly Seely held off defending conference champion Kelsey Patterson (Utah) in the 3-meter diving event, tallying a score of 331.30.
· UNLV won its fifth men's 400-yard medley relay title in seven years (fourth straight overall) in a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 3:14.80.
· BYU won the 400-yard medley relay in an all-time MWC record time of 3:43.49. The provisional qualifying mark is also a BYU school record and the Cougars fourth 400 medley relay title since joining the league.
