Fort Collins - A program aimed at providing positive role models for local elementary school children through a variety of activities is the centerpiece of a partnership announced today between Colorado State University's athletics department at the Poudre School District.

Director of Athletics Mark Driscoll said the partnership - named "Ram Reach" - provides an opportunity for the school's more than 350 student-athletes to give back to the local community while at the same time providing a positive influence for local students.

"It is a priority for every member of our staff and all of our student-athletes to be involved in this program," said Driscoll. "The partnership that we have formed in cooperation with the Poudre School District is a chance to impact the lives of children throughout the community. It is a responsibility that we take very seriously in being able to provide a positive influence on the lives of the children in Fort Collins.

"I speak for everyone within our program by saying there is nothing as vital nor as important as for our student-athletes to provide a positive impact in the community. While it is a chance for elementary students to grow, I have seen how it directly impacts the lives of our student-athletes as they work side-by-side with the youngsters."

Driscoll said the partnership would never have been possible without the cooperation and support of PSD administrators.

"From the outset, everyone associated with the Poudre School District has been supportive of this program," he said. "They provided an environment that was conducive to making this partnership a reality. There is no question this partnership will stimulate growth for our student-athletes as well as the elementary students in Fort Collins."

Driscoll said highlights of the Ram Reach program include:

  • Each of CSU's 16 sport programs will adopt a local elementary school. Student-athletes will tutor and mentor those students during the school year;
  • Student-athletes will encourage healthy lifestyles by providing information about physical fitness and nutrition;
  • Student-athletes will focus on the value of sportsmanship, integrity, and teamwork in discussions with the students;
  • CSU athletics will provide 100 tickets to each elementary school for a specific event at Moby Arena. When the elementary school group attends the event, CSU will recognize the elementary school
  • PSD will distribute information and help promote CSU's community outreach program, Ram Jam, to all elementary school students.
