HEAD ATHLETIC TRAINER

Student Health Services is an on-campus healthcare facility designed to provide San Diego State University students with medical and health promotion services supportive of the educational mission of the University. Student Health Services houses part or all of several extramurally funded research and/or service programs including several clinical drug trials. Student Health Services also employs two faculty members who have extramurally funded independent research projects. Student Health Services is poised to relocate to a new 43,000+ square foot facility, with over 100 staff and approximately 20 student employees. The annual operating budget is approximately $8 million.
The SDSU Athletic Department has five trainers as well as several student trainers. A physical therapist is also being added to the staff. In August of 2001, all facets of the Department of Athletics relocated to the newly constructed Aztec Athletic Center. The athletic center is a four-story, 130,000 square foot structure and includes a state-of-the-art weight room which encompasses 13,000 square feet and is located on the first floor. The new facility also includes new locker rooms, equipment rooms and an athletic training center for all men's and women's varsity sports (except baseball and basketball.)
This position will report to, and work closely with, the Health Services Director of Athletic Medicine to assure that health services are provided to intercollegiate student-athletes in a coordinated, comprehensive and high-quality manner. The majority of this position's time will be devoted to athletic medicine activities required by the Department of Athletics. This includes direct care of the student-athletes and supervision of the athletic training staff, strength and conditioning staff, and other staff as assigned. A percentage of this position's time will be devoted to the operation of a physical therapy program for the general student body in the athletic training room.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The incumbent will: perform the duties of a head athletic trainer; provide direct patient care to all student-athletes with direct responsibilities to football; perform injury evaluations; administer treatment to injuries sustained in practices, competition or strength/conditioning sessions; design and implement rehabilitation program for a wide variety of injuries; provide injury prevention techniques including but not limited to taping, fabrication of protective padding, and application of rigid and semi-rigid splinting devices; promote the education and prevention of the use and abuse of drugs; implement a nutritional program for student-athletes; develop a comprehensive and flexible record management system for tracking and evaluation of resource expenditure; manage a Division I university athletic training program including budget, procurement and staffing; provide professional interaction and influence between campus departments and affiliates at the community, county, state, and federal levels; maintain an effective injury tracking system; conduct independent administrative studies to evaluate processes and recommend solutions; demonstrate expertise in the various financial and employment-related mechanisms within a public university environment.
QUALIFICATIONS: Master's degree from an accredited university or college in a field appropriate for the duties of the position. National Athletic Trainers Association Certification as an athletic trainer is required. Minimum of 5 years experience on the NCAA Division IA intercollegiate level as an athletic trainer and previous experience performing the specific duties of this position. Experience in the care of musculoskeletal injuries, as well as experience with the college-aged population and student-athletes. Experience with management, staffing, financial, and operational functions in athletic training and strength training on a university campus.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Possession of or eligible for a valid certificate as a Licensed Physical Therapist issued by the Physical Therapy Board of California. Experience as a head athletic trainer and experience working as a physical therapist, preferably in a supervisory role.
