BYU Leads Mountain West In Sears Directors' Cup Final Standings

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - BYU finished the 2002-03 athletic season ranked 45th in the final NCAA Division I Sears Directors' Cup standings. The Cougars ranked highest among Mountain West Conference institutions with 434 points. Stanford won the Sears Directors' Cup with a total of 1,420.5 points, surpassing the runner-up, Texas by 326.5 points. Stanford won its ninth straight NACDA Directors' Cup with a national championship in men's cross country and 16 top 10 finishes, including nine teams that finished in the top five. All eight MWC schools placed in the final standings - Utah (56th, 348.5 pts), New Mexico (59th, 314.5 pts), San Diego State (87th, 193 pts), Colorado State (90th, 184 pts), UNLV (94th, 179.5 pts), U.S. Air Force Academy (144th, 108.5 pts), and Wyoming (169th, 78 pts). Developed as a joint effort between USA TODAY and NACDA, the NACDA Directors' Cup program is the only all-sports competition that recognizes the institution in each of the four categories with the best overall athletics program. Of the 318 eligible colleges and universities in the NCAA Division I, a total of 268 (84 percent) scored points in the NACDA Directors' Cup competition. |
