SALT LAKE CITY - The Mountain West Conference is set to "go fourth" this month.

After just three years after its July 1999 inception, the Mountain West has made considerable strides among the nation's collegiate conferences - the Bowl Championship Series notwithstanding.

"Each year we gain, we grow a little," said MWC Commissioner Craig Thompson. "It's not a sprint, it's a middle-distance race."

The eight-member league is comprised of Air Force, Brigham Young, Colorado State, Nevada Las Vegas, New Mexico, San Diego State, Utah and Wyoming - all having broken away from the Western Athletic Conference, which is celebrating its own 40th anniversary.

If one looks at national rankings of conferences in terms of attendance averages and power indexes, the Mountain West often only trails the half-dozen high-profile leagues - the Big Ten, the Big 12, the Southeastern, the Pac-10, the Big East and the Atlantic Coast. And in some rankings, the MWC breaks into that top six.
