COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - BYU finished the 2001-02 athletic season ranked 23rd in the final NCAA Division I Sears Directors' Cup standings. The Cougars ranked highest among Mountain West Conference institutions with 685 points.

Stanford won the Sears Directors' Cup with a total of 1,499 points, surpassing runner-up Texas by 388.5 points. Stanford won its eighth straight Sears Directors' Cup on the strength of four national championships (women's volleyball, women's tennis and men's and women's water polo), a total of 11 teams finishing among the top five in national competition, and 17 teams placing in the top 10.

All eight MWC schools placed in the final standings - Utah (70th, 250 pts), Colorado State (77th, 238 pts), New Mexico (77th, 238 pts), UNLV (85th, 211.5 pts), U.S. Air Force Academy (104th, 169.5 pts), San Diego State (116th, 148 points), and Wyoming (190th, 57 pts). The Directors' Cup is presented annually by Sears, Roebuck and Co. and the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) based on points accumulated for placing in national championship competition.

Of the 323 eligible colleges and universities in the NCAA Division I, a total of 261 (81 percent) scored points in the Sears Directors' Cup competition.

Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 20 sports -- 10 for men and 10 for women. Each national champion receives 100 points.
