MWC Board Of Directors Concludes Successful Annual Meeting

CARLSBAD, Calif. - The Mountain West Conference Board of Directors, comprised of the presidents from all eight member institutions, completed its annual meeting today. It was the Board's third meeting since the inception of the Conference in 1999.

The Board considered a number of Conference and national issues during its three-day session, including conversations with NCAA President Cedric Dempsey. Among actions taken by the Board on Mountain West Conference initiatives were the following:

  • Agreed to continue the Conference's moratorium on membership expansion until 2004.

  • Agreed to table, at the request of the Colorado High School Activities Association, a decision on a recommendation from the MWC Joint Council that the 2004 and 2005 Conference basketball championships be conducted at the Pepsi Center in Denver.

  • Refined further the Conference benchmarks process that will measure member institutions in a variety of areas related to the Mountain West Conference's stated goals and philosophy, began the development of a tactical plan for the further advancement of the MWC.

  • Discussed the issue of Friday football contests. Confirmed, that while the Conference expects the majority of its games to be played on Thursdays and Saturdays, individual institutions may at their discretion consider Friday opportunities on a case-by-case basis in consultation with the Conference office, the league television partners and the various constituents of their communities.

  • Endorsed the development of a modified formula for the distribution of revenue from Conference football bowl games.

    Dr. Stephen Weber, president at San Diego State University, assumes the position as chair of the MWC Board and the Board's Executive Committee. He will be joined on the Executive Committee by outgoing chair Dr. William Gordon of New Mexico, Lt. General John Dallager of Air Force, incoming chair for 2002-03, and Dr. Carol Harter of UNLV, the MWC's representative on the NCAA Board of Directors. The MWC Board of Directors specifically acknowledged the contributions of Dr. Gordon during his term as chair.

    "We had another excellent meeting," said MWC Commissioner Craig Thompson. "Our Board is pleased with the Conference's progress in its first two years and united as we move into our next phase of development. We again had record revenue distribution and television exposure. The future is bright for the Mountain West Conference."

    Commissioner Thompson will be travelling back to Colorado Springs Tuesday afternoon and will be available for comments and questions Wednesday morning, June 6.
