CARLSBAD, Calif. - The Mountain West Conference Board of Directors meeting continued today at The Aviara Four Seasons Resort with a report from NCAA President Myles Brand and continued discussion on the strategic position of the conference.
The Board of Directors expressed support for the NCAA's academic reform initiatives and addressing student-athlete welfare issues. The Board also had a candid discussion with president Brand regarding the current and future structure of Division I-A postseason football.
"I suspect there can be some improvements on how the BCS operates in its cooperative activity with the NCAA," said NCAA President Myles Brand. "I think these are complicated media negotiations between conferences and networks. I know it is the concern of the presidents of this conference and to presidents of other conferences in non-BCS leagues."
In other business, the presidents reviewed the annual benchmarks information in which member institutions are compared on athletic and academic achievements. The Board also continued its in-depth discussions concerning expansion and other membership options.
