PROVO (AP) - Tom Holmoe, who resigned last fall after five seasons as California's football coach, was hired Thursday as BYU's associate athletic director for development.
Holmoe, 42, will oversee fund-raising for nine men's and 10 women's programs. He also will supervise the boosters club and a capital campaign for athletic facilities.
"To have the chance to come back to my alma mater and work and contribute to its future is special," Holmoe said. "To do it in athletics is even better. There are facilities to be built and resources needed to help teams develop."
Holmoe played defensive back at BYU from 1979-82, then spent seven seasons playing for the San Francisco 49ers. He moved into coaching, first as a Stanford assistant and later with the 49ers and then at California.
He was promoted from defensive coordinator to head coach at Cal after Steve Mariucci left to take over the 49ers in 1997. Holmoe's tenure in Berkeley, though, was a flop. He went 16-39 at Cal overall and resigned at the end of a 1-10 season.
That didn't deter BYU athletic director Val Hale.
"The minute I heard Tom Holmoe was no longer going to be the football coach at Cal, I began trying to figure out how I could make him part of our athletic administrative team," Hale said.
Besides his playing days at BYU, Holmoe was a graduate assistant coach under former football coach LaVell Edwards from 1990-91.
"Everyone in intercollegiate athletics who has worked with Tom has nothing but great things to say about him," Hale said. "He is committed to help us achieve our lofty fund-raising goals so we can continue moving our programs forward."
