BYU Leads Mountain West In Sears Directors' Cup Winter Standings

Division I Current Winter Standings (PDF Format)

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - BYU's fall sports season success coupled with its success in women's basketball, men's swimming and indoor track and field placed it 10th in the current winter standings for the Sears Directors' Cup. The Cougars are ranked highest among Mountain West Conference institutions with 456.5 points.

Seven-time Division I Sears Directors' Cup champion Stanford (1,004 pts) and inaugural champion North Carolina (680.5 pts), sit at the top of the standings. Texas is in third with 568.5 points, followed by Colorado, in fourth with 541 points, and, Florida in fifth with 537 points.

All eight MWC schools placed in the current winter standings - Colorado State (56th, 195 pts), Utah (72nd, 155 pts), Air Force (86th, 127.5 pts), New Mexico (87th, 125 pts), UNLV (103rd, 96.5 pts), Wyoming (150th, 57 pts), and San Diego State (163rd, 45 pts).

The Directors' Cup is presented annually by Sears, Roebuck and Co. and the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) based on points accumulated for placing in national championship competition.

This is the second set of winter standings and includes the sports of women's and men's basketball, swimming and indoor track and field, along with women's ice hockey, men's wrestling and fencing, rifle and skiing. Winning national championships were Connecticut in women's basketball, Maryland in men's basketball, Auburn in women's swimming, Texas in men's swimming, Louisiana State in women's indoor track and field, Tennessee in men's indoor track and field, Minnesota in men's wrestling, St. John's in fencing, and Denver in skiing. The highest Division I finish in the national collegiate sports were Brown, second in women's ice hockey, and Kentucky, second in rifle.

Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 20 sports -- 10 for men and 10 for women. Each national champion receives 100 points. Winter standings to date follows. The final winter standings will be published on Thursday, April 25 following the women's gymnastics championship. Please note that standings published midseason are unofficial standings. Official standings will be published upon the completion of the spring season. Codes are as follows: W - women, M - men, BB - basketball, Hoc - hockey, SW - swimming, T&F - track and field, and WR - wrestling.
