These rules are important to consider when transferring into the Mountain West Conference or for a student-athlete who transfers from one Mountain West Conference institution to another Mountain West Conference member's institution.
Further, an NCAA nonqualifer is defined as:
NCAA Bylaw 14.02.10.2 : A nonqualifier is a student who has not graduated from high school or who, at the time specified in the regulation, has not successfully completed the required core-curriculum or has not presented the required minimum core-curriculum grade-point average and/or the corresponding SAT/ACT score required for a qualifier.
MWC Rule 3.2.1.1 - Nonqualifier - High School.
Beginning with the 2003-04 academic year nonqualifiers as defined by the NCAA, whose first full-time collegiate enrollment occurs at a Mountain West Conference institution, shall be permanently ineligible for practice and competition at any Mountain West Conference institution.
MWC Rule 3.2.1.2 - Two-Year College Transfers - Non-Qualifiers out of High School.
A nonqualifier who transfers to a Mountain West Conference institution from a two-year college shall be eligible for competition, practice and financial aid provided the following conditions are met:
- The student has graduated from the two-year college earning an associate of arts degree or its equivalent;
- The student has satisfactorily completed a minimum of 48-semester or 72-quarter hours of transferable degree credit acceptable toward any baccalaureate degree program at the certifying institution;
- The student has attended a two-year college as a full-time student for at least three semesters or four quarters (excluding summer terms);
- The student has a cumulative grade-point average of at least 2.0, and
- The student has met all applicable NCAA progress toward degree and transfer rules as well as any applicable Conference rules.
MWC Rule 3.2.1.3 - Four-Year College Transfers - Nonqualifiers out of High School.
A nonqualifier who transfers to a Mountain West Conference institution from a four-year college shall be eligible for competition, practice and financial aid provided the following conditions are met:
- The student has satisfactorily completed a minimum of 48-semester or 72-quarter hours of transferable degree credit acceptable toward any baccalaureate degree program at the certifying institution;
- The student has attended a four-year college as a full-time student for at least four semesters or six quarters (excluding summer terms);
- The student has a cumulative grade-point average of at least 2.0, and
- The student has met all applicable NCAA progress toward degree and transfer rules as well as any applicable Conference rules. (Revised November 2002)
MWC Rule 3.6 Intra-Conference Transfer.
A student-athlete who has received athletically-related financial aid or a student-athlete who was a varsity athletics award winner at the United States Air Force Academy, and who transfers, directly or indirectly, from one Conference institution to another shall meet the following requirements prior to being permitted to compete at the certifying institution:
- The student-athlete shall complete an academic year in residence at the certifying institution;
- The student-athlete shall forfeit one season of competition; and
- The student-athlete shall not receive athletically-related financial aid during the academic year in residence.
This rule shall not apply if the student-athlete's previous institution discontinues the student-athlete's sport.
