San Diego State shot a 7-over-par 295 and Colorado State finished with a 19-over-par 307 as the 2011 NCAA Men's Golf Championships got underway Tuesday at the par-72, 7,416-yard Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla.

The Aztecs and Rams are two of 30 teams taking part in the event to mark the second consecutive season and eighth time in league history that at least two men's golf teams have represented the Mountain West at the NCAA National Championships.

The tournament, which runs through Sunday, June 5, features 54 holes of stroke play with one round played each day. The individual national champion will be crowned at the conclusion of stroke play on Thursday, June 2, while the top eight teams head to match play with the national title determined between the remaining two squads on Sunday. Mountain West champion San Diego State, which earned the tournament's No. 7 seed after winning the Southwest Regional in Tucson, Ariz., on May 21, is making its 26th appearance in the NCAA Championship. The Aztecs finished 14th in the event in 2008. SDSU, tied for 10th with Kennesaw State after Tuesday's opening round, is currently paced by junior J.J. Spaun, who carded a 3-under 69 and is in a two-way tie for third place. Freshman Todd Baek is at even-par and in a 15-way tie for 19th.

Colorado State, which is participating in its second NCAA Championship and first since 1999 following its second-place finish at the South-Central Regional in Erie, Colo., sits in tied for 25th after the opening round. Ram junior Kory Harrell will begin second-round play tied for 34th after shooting a 1-over 73 in Tuesday's opening round. Senior Ryan Peterson, the 2010 MW individual champion, carded a 5-over 77 and is currently is in a 18-way tie for 90th.

Georgia Tech, the No. 4 seed, leads the tournament at 5-under 283. Georgia Tech's James White (5-under 67) is the individual leader after 18 holes.

NCAA Men's Golf Regional Round-up

San Diego State and Colorado State advanced to the 2011 NCAA Men's Golf Championships on Saturday when the Aztecs won the Southwest Regional in Tucson, Ariz., and the Rams finished second at the South Central Regional in Erie, Colo. The Mountain West will be represented by at least two men's golf teams at the NCAA National Championships for the second consecutive season and eighth time in league history.

The three-day NCAA Regional Championships concluded at six sites throughout the country on Saturday. The low five teams and lowest scoring individual not on those teams move on to the NCAA National Championships, which will be held at Karsten Creek in Stillwater, Okla., May 31-June 5.

•Southwest Regional

Eighth-ranked and No. 2-seed San Diego State became the second men's team in Mountain West history (UNLV, 2005) to capture a regional title, posting a seven-stroke win over No. 1 seed and No. 7-ranked Texas A&M at the par 71, 7,199-yard OMNI Tucson National in Tucson, Ariz.

The 2011 Mountain West champion Aztecs, who never trailed after Thursday's opening round, advanced to the national championships for the fifth time since 1999. After shooting a 7-under 277 on Saturday, SDSU concluded the 54-hole tournament with a 19-under 833.

Junior Alex Kang, who finished with a 1-under 70 on Saturday, posted SDSU's top individual performance, finishing tied for fourth place with a 5-under 208.

Aztec freshman Todd Baek tied for seventh with a 4-under 209, while senior Johan Carlsson carded a 3-under 210 and finished tied for 11th.

Competing as an individual, BYU sophomore Zac Blair tied for 25th place after posting a 54-hole total of 1-over 214.

In addition to SDSU, Texas A&M (12-under 840) and Cal (9-under 843) other teams qualifying for the NCAA Championships from the Southwest Regional include Pepperdine and host Arizona, which both posted an 8-under 844 to tie for fourth place. Medalist honors went to Matt Hansen of UC Davis, who finished at 9-under 204. Hansen qualified for the NCAA Championships as the low individual who was not a member of one of the top five teams.

•South Central Regional

No. 11 seed and 65th-ranked Colorado State started the final round tied for sixth place but shot a 9-under 279 on Saturday to qualify for the program's second-ever national championship at the par 72, 7,758-yard Colorado National Golf Club in Erie, Colo.

The Rams, who finished with a 54-hole total of 13-under 851, were paced by junior Kory Harrell, senior Ryan Peterson and freshman Mike Sorensen, all of whom finished tied for 16th with a 1-under 215. CSU junior Zahkai Brown, who led the tournament after the opening round, shot a 3-under 69 on Saturday to finish tied for 24th at even par.

The MW narrowly missed qualifying a second team from the South Central Regional when TCU (6-under, 858) finished a stroke behind Georgia and Arizona State, which finished tied for fourth.

Senior Tom Hoge posted TCU's best individual performance of the tournament, shooting a 3-under 69 on Saturday to finish with a 54-hole total of 1-under 215. TCU sophomore Daniel Jennevert, who matched Hoge's 3-under on Saturday, ended the tournament tied for 24th at even par.

Wyoming senior Gabe Meier, who competed individually, was one of six players to finished tied with Jennevert for 24th place.

No. 1-ranked Oklahoma State stormed to the team title, finishing with a 31-under-par 833. Northwestern (9-under 855) finished in third place. Medalist honors went to Oklahoma State's Kevin Tway, who posted a 10-under 206. Cal Poly's Geoff Gonzalez (6-under 210) qualified for the NCAA Championships as the low individual who was not a member of one of the top five teams.

•West Regional

No. 6 seed UNLV, which entered regional play ranked 36th nationally, tied an NCAA record with its 23rd consecutive regional appearance. The Rebels finished the West Regional in 12th place, carding a 33-over-par 897 at the par 72, 6,903-yard The Farms Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.

Blake Biddle, who earlier this month was named the MW Freshman of the Year, turned in UNLV's top individual performance of the tournament, tying for eighth with a 1-under 215. Meanwhile, teammate Derek Ernst, the 2011 MW Player of the Year, shot 7-over 79 on Saturday after starting the day tied for fifth place. Ernst finished with a 54-hole total of 5-over 221, tied for 34th place.

New Mexico's Travis Ross, who had received an at-large berth as an individual, posted a 54-hole tole of 12-over 228 to tie for 54th overall.

Second-ranked UCLA captured the team title with a 10-under-par 854. USC (7-under, 857) was second, followed by San Diego (even-par, 864), Ohio State (1-over, 865) and Texas (9-over, 873). Medalist honors went to UCLA's Patrick Cantley, who posted a 54-hole total of 13-under 203. Middle Tennessee State's Jason Millard (5-under, 211) qualified for the NCAA Championships as the low individual who was not a member of one of the top five teams.

San Diego State Men's Golf Team Increases Lead at NCAA Southwest Regional

The NCAA Men's Regional Golf Championships continued Friday at six sites across the country. Participants are playing a total of 54 holes (18 holes each day). Regional action concludes Saturday, when the low five teams and the low individual not on those teams will advance from each site to the NCAA National Championships at Karsten Creek in Stillwater, Okla., May 31-June 5.

•Southwest Regional

Eighth-ranked and No. 2-seed San Diego State posted a 6-under 278 on Friday after the second round of the NCAA Southwest Regional at the par 71, 7,199-yard OMNI Tucson National in Tucson, Ariz.

The 2011 Mountain West champion Aztecs, who held a one shot lead after Thursday's opening round, head into Saturday's final round at 12-under 566. Arizona, who is hosting the regional, is five strokes back at 7-under 571, followed by seventh-ranked and No. 1 seed Texas A&M at 5-under 563.

SDSU currently has three players among the top 11, with junior Alex Kang tied for fourth at 4-under 138 after shooting a 1-under 70 on Friday. Senior Johan Carlsson and junior Colin Featherstone are both at 2-under 140 in a five-way tie for 11th place.

BYU's Zac Blair, who is competing individually, is at 4-over 146 and in a way five-way tie for 45th place.

Oregon State's Alex Moore, who carded a 2-under 69 on Friday, paces the field with a 36-hole total of 7-under 135.

•West Regional

No. 6 seed UNLV shot a 9-over 297 on Friday and finds itself in 12th place after two rounds of the NCAA West Regional at the par 72, 6,903-yard The Farms Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.

The 36th-ranked Rebels have a 36-hole total of 16-over 592 heading into Saturday's final round. UNLV junior Derek Ernst, the MW Player of the Year, is in a seven-way tie for fifth place after carding a 1-over 73 on Friday. For the tournament, Ernst has carded a 2-under 142. UNLV's Blake Biddle, the MW Freshman of the Year, is in a three-way tie for 12th with a two-day total of 1-under 143.

New Mexico's Travis Ross, who received an at-large berth as an individual, is in an eight-way tie for 41st on the leaderboard with a 36-hole total of 5-over 149.

UCLA's Patrick Cantley is the tournament leader at 8-under 136. No. 15 USC leads the team standings at 8-under 568, followed by No. 2 UCLA (4-under 572) and No. 26 Ohio State (3-over 579).

•South Central Regional

As was the case with Thursday's opening round, weather again played a factor on Day 2 of the NCAA South Central Regional in Erie, Colo. Participants endured a 95-minute rain delay Friday at the par 72, 7,758-yard Colorado National Golf Club.

Despite the conditions, 38th-ranked TCU, the region's No. 7 seed, climbed into the fifth place on Friday after posting a 6-under 282 on the day. The Horned Frogs are 5-under 571 for the tournament and a stroke back of Georgia and Clemson, which are tied for third.

TCU sophomore Pontus Gad will head into the final round tied for ninth after shooting a 4-under 68 on Friday. Gad is at 4-under 140 for the tournament, while fellow Frog Eli Cole is tied for 22nd at 1-under 143.

No. 65 Colorado State, the No. 11 seed, is tied for sixth with No. 24 Arizona State at 4-under 572. After shooting a 2-under 70 on Friday, CSU senior Ryan Peterson is currently in a six-way tie for 11th place with 36-hole total of 3-under 141.

Wyoming's Gabe Maier, competing as an individual, joins Peterson in a tie for 11th place heading into Saturday's final round.

Top-ranked Oklahoma State extended its lead on Friday after shooting a combined 13-under 275 as a team. After 36 holes, the Cowboys are 25 under par 551, while No. 13 Auburn is second at 9-under 567.

MW Champion San Diego State Holds Lead After First Round of NCAA Men's Golf Regionals

San Diego State, which captured its first Mountain West title earlier this month, held a one-shot lead over second-place Washington on Thursday after the opening round of the NCAA Southwest Regional at the par 71, 7,199-yard OMNI Tucson National in Tucson, Ariz.

The eighth-ranked Aztecs have two players among the top 10 heading into Friday's second round, with Colin Featherstone and 83rd-ranked Alex Kang currently tied for sixth at 3-under.

BYU's Zac Blair, competing individually, is tied for 53rd after shooting a 4-over-par 75.

Second-place Washington, ranked No. 31, is currently followed by No. 30 Liberty (4-under par). Unranked Arizona and No. 7 Texas A&M are tied for fourth at 3-under.

Rebels are Sixth After Opening Round

UNLV shot a 7-over-par 295 and is tied for sixth with unranked SMU after the opening round of the NCAA West Regional at the par 72, 6,903-yard The Farms Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.

The No. 36 Rebels are making their 23rd consecutive NCAA regional appearance, a mark shared only by Arizona State and Oklahoma State.

UNLV's Derek Ernst, the 2011 MW Player of the Year, will begin the second round on Friday tied for fourth after carding a 3-under-par 69.

New Mexico's Travis Ross, who received an at-large berth as an individual, is tied for 57th after shooting a 6-over-par 78.

No. 15 USC leads the tournament at 10-under, followed by No. 2 UCLA and No. 11 Texas, who are tied for second at 1-under.

Play Suspended in Boulder

The opening round of the NCAA South Central Regional was suspended due to inclement weather with only six of 13 teams having completed play at the par 72, 7,758-yard Colorado National Golf Club in Boulder, Colo. The conclusion of the first round is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. MT Friday, with the second round set to begin at 10:30 a.m.

Colorado State's Zahkai Brown leads the tournament after shooting a 7-under-par 65 through 16 holes. As a team, the unranked Rams are currently in fourth place at 5-under, while fellow MW member and 38th-ranked TCU is sixth at 2-over. Colorado State's Ryan Peterson is tied for 15th after carding a 1-under-par 71.

TCU's Eli Cole and Pontus Gad finished the first round tied for 20th at even-par.

Wyoming's Gabe Maier, who is competing as an individual, sits at 1-over 73 through 12 holes.

Oklahoma State, which is ranked first nationally, leads the tournament after shooting a 12-under-par 276. The Cowboys are followed by No. 13 Auburn (-8) and No. 24 Arizona State (-6).

Mountain West To Send Large Contingent of Top-10 Seeds to NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Prelims

BYU junior Miles Batty and UNLV junior Amanda Bingson headline a list of 21 Mountain West athletes earning top-10 seeds Thursday in the upcoming NCAA Division I men's and women's outdoor track and field prelims.

The competition will be held May 26-28. The West region, which includes all MW teams, will be hosted by the University of Oregon in Eugene, Ore., while the East region will be hosted by Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind. The qualifiers from both regions will compete in the NCAA Championships, held June 8-11 at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.

Batty, the MW champion in the 1,500 meters, set a school record in the race this year with a time of 3:36.25, a feat that came on the heels of breaking the indoor mile record (3:55.79) at the NCAA championships. Named the Men's Track Athlete of the Year by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, Batty is the No. 1 overall seed in the nation in the 1,500 meters.

Bingson, the two-time MW defending champion in the hammer throw, is seeded No. 2 in the event in the West region. Bingson, who earned the Women's Outstanding Performance award at the MW Championships, broke her own school record this season with an effort of 229'-0".

TCU sophomore Charles Silmon, who earned the Men's Outstanding Performance award at the MW Championships, garnered a No. 8 seed in the 100 meters and a No. 6 seed in the 200 meters. Other MW athletes gaining top 10 seeds on the men's side include Air Force senior Justin Tyner in the 3,000-meter Steeplechase (No. 2); New Mexico senior Rory Fraser in the 5,000-meter run (No. 8); New Mexico senior Keith Gerrard in the 10,000-meter run (No. 2); Air Force sophomore Cale Simmons in the pole vault (No. 7); BYU senior Leif Arrhenius in the discus (No. 2) and shot put (No. 6); BYU senior Oliver Whaley in the hammer throw (No. 8); and BYU junior Chris Reno in the javelin throw (No. 9).

On the women's side, TCU senior Jessica Young earned the No. 5 seed in the 100-meter dash and is seeded No. 8 in the 200 meters. Others earning top 10 seeds include BYU senior Katie Palmer (No. 8) and BYU junior Lacey Bleazard (No. 10) in the 800-meter run; Utah senior Alyssa Abbott in the 1,500 meters (No. 8); BYU junior Katy Andrews in the 3,000-meter Steeplechase (No. 8); BYU sophomore Morgan Haws (No. 9) and New Mexico senior Ruth Senior (No. 10) in the 10,000 meters; BYU junior Ada Robinson in the high jump (No. 3); TCU junior Whitney Gipson in the long jump (No. 3); and UNLV junior Chelsea Cassulo in the hammer throw (No. 5).

Two MW relay teams also garnered top 10 seeds. On the men's side, the TCU quartet of OJ Stoneham, Mark Barnes, Mychal Dungey and Charles Silmon is seeded No. 5 in the 4x100-meter relay. The TCU women's 4x400-meter relay team of Briyanni Thomas, Quintera Charles, Teneshia Peart and Kristal Juarez earned a No. 10 seed.

Two Mountain West women's tennis teams were eliminated from the NCAA Championships on Saturday.

UNLV, making its fifth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Championships, dropped a 4-2 decision to San Diego in the first round on Saturday at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.

The Lady Rebels' No. 1 doubles team of Aleksandra Josifoska and Nives Pavlovic pulled within 7-6 against USD's Stephanie Hoffpauir and Juliette Coupez, but a strong forehand down the line by Hoffpauir enabled the 29th-ranked Toreros to hold on for an 8-6 win and the doubles point.

UNLV, which entered the match ranked No. 39, got its lone doubles win at the second spot where Lucia Batta and Anna Maskaljun closed the season on a school-record 19-match winning streak. Maskaljun ended her career in second place on the school's all-time list with 90 wins. Maskaljun's singles sweep (7-5, 6-0) of Maja Sujica marked her 21st win in her final 22 collegiate matches.

Undefeated this season in Mountain West action, the Lady Rebels closed out the season with an overall mark of 20-6.

Meanwhile, Utah, making back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Championships for the first time since qualifying three consecutive times from 1996-98, was ousted by Alabama, 4-0, in Athens, Ga.

The 49th-ranked Utes were bidding to advance to the tournament's second round for the first time in school history while avenging a 4-2 loss to the No. 26-ranked Crimson Tide in February. Utah, which won the MW Championships, finished the season 16-10 overall after going 7-1 in MW play.

Junior Anastasia Putilina, the MW Women's Player of the Year, held a 3-0 advantage in her third set against Mary Anne McFarlane when play was halted after Alabama clinched the team match.

Postseason Play Continues at Stanford

The men's and women's Mountain West Tennis Players of the Year --- UNLV's Mehdi Bouras and Utah's Anastasia Putilina --- will compete in the NCAA Individual Tennis Championships May 25-30 at the Taube Tennis Center in Stanford, Calif., following the conclusion of the team championships on May 24.

Bouras (22-11), the MW's highest-ranked singles player at No. 72 in the nation, is the first Rebel men's player to earn a spot in the NCAA singles field since Elliot Wronski in 2007. He will also pair with teammate Bernard Schoeman in the doubles competition. Bouras and Schoeman are 13-8 overall as a tandem and boast three wins over top-20 opponents this spring. They are also the first UNLV doubles team to reach the national tournament since Nenad Zivkovic and Gregor Skorin in 1999.

Putilina, ranked No. 92 in the latest ITA rankings, earned the MW's automatic bid to the NCAA's women's singles field.

Individual and doubles draws will be released just prior to the tournament.

The BYU men's tennis team, which finished the Mountain West regular season unbeaten in capturing its second straight title, fell 4-0 Friday to No. 31 San Diego in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at Marks Stadium on the campus of USC in Los Angeles, Calif.

The No. 35-ranked Cougars, who entered the NCAA Tournament having won their second MW Tournament, finished the season 21-6 overall. It was the team's second NCAA Tournament appearance under coach Brad Pearce, the MW Coach of the Year.

Patrick Kawka, the MW Freshman of the Year who also earned the ITA's Mountain Region Rookie of the Year award, dropped his first set 7-6 before quickly turning the tables in a 6-1 win against Clarke Spinosa in the second set. Kawka trailed 3-0 in the deciding set when play on all courts was halted after San Diego notched four team points.

On the women's side, the Mountain West's two NCAA qualifiers begin action on Saturday.

No. 39 UNLV will battle No. 29 San Diego at 9 a.m. PT, followed by Quinnipiac squaring off against host and sixth-ranked UCLA at Noon PT at the Los Angeles Tennis Center in Los Angeles, Calif.

In Athens, Ga., No. 49 Utah will take on No. 26 Alabama at 9 a.m. ET at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. The other match-up will feature Marist squaring off against host and eighth-ranked Georgia at Noon ET.

MW Women's Golf Teams Fall Short in Quest for NCAA National Championships

The NCAA Women's Regional Golf Championships concluded Saturday at three sites around the country. The top eight teams, as well as the two individuals with the lowest scores who were not members of a top-eight team, advanced to the NCAA National Championships at the Traditions Club in Bryan, Texas, May 17-20.

East Regional

Mountain West champion TCU shot a 6-over-par 294 in Saturday's final round and finished 10th at the par-72, 6,271-yard Legends Course at LPGA International in Daytona, Fla. The 33rd-ranked Horned Frogs posted a three-day total of 29-over 893.

TCU's top individual performance came from junior Brooke Beeler (Butler, Ill.), who shot a 1-over 73 to finish in a tie for 28th. Beeler finished with a 5-over-par 221 for the tournament. Meanwhile, senior Melissa Loh (Singapore) carded an even-par 72 on Saturday to finish in a tie for 31st. Loh concluded the tournament with a 6-over 222.

The East Regional team title went to No. 3-ranked Alabama, which finished with a 2-over 866. The Crimson Tide's Stephanie Meadow won the individual title with a 9-under 207.

West Regional

Unranked BYU finished with a 54-over 918 to place 12th at the par-72, 6,266-yard Washington National Golf Course in Auburn, Wash. The Cougars were led by sophomore Kelsey Vines (St. George, Utah), who shot a 3-over 75 to finish in a tie for 25th. Vines had a 54-hole total of 10-over 226. Meanwhile, BYU freshman Annika Afoa (Murray, Utah) finished in a tie for 35th after posting an 11-over 227.

Also at Washington National Golf Course, San Diego State carded a 54-hole total of 74-over 938 to finish 17th. For the third consecutive day, the No. 48 Aztecs were led by junior Malin Enarsson (Gothenburg, Sweden), who had a 4-over 76 on Saturday to tie for 41st. Enarsson finished the tournament at 13-over 229.

New Mexico posted a 77-over 941 to finish 19th. Sophomore Beth Buchner (Loveland, Colo.) paced the Lobos with a 54-hole total of 17-over 233 to finish in a tie for 58th.

Colorado State junior Brianna Espinoza (Phoenix, Ariz.), who received an at-large individual berth to the postseason, finished tied for 63rd, posting a 54-hole total of 18-over 234.

USC, the nation's top-ranked team, won the team title with a 2-over 866. Tennessee's Erica Popson took home medalist honors, finishing with an 8-under 208.

Central Regional

No. 44 UNLV finished 21st after compiling a three-day total of 90-over-par 954 at the par-72, 6,208-yard Warren Golf Course in South Bend, Ind.

The Lady Rebels, making their ninth straight regional appearance, were paced by senior Therese Koelbaek (Holte, Denmark). Koelbaek, the 2011 Mountain West Player of the Year, shot an even-par 72 on Saturday to finish in a tie for 18th. She concluded the tournament with a three-day total of 9-over-par 225.

No. 2-ranked UCLA won the tournament with a 26-over-par 890. UCLA's Stephanie Kono and LSU's Megan McChrystal shared individual honors, finishing at 2-over-par 218.

TCU Looks to Close With a Rush in Final Round of NCAA Women's Golf Regionals

The second round of the NCAA Women's Golf Regional Championships concluded Friday at each of the three sites. Participants are playing a total of 54 holes (18 holes each day). Regional action concludes Saturday, when eight teams and two individuals will advance from each site to the NCAA National Championships at the Traditions Club in Bryan, Texas, May 17-20.

East Regional

Mountain West champion TCU posted a 9-over-par 297 in Friday's second round and has sole possession of 12th place at the par-72, 6,271-yard Legends Course at LPGA International in Daytona, Fla. The 33rd-ranked Horned Frogs are 23 shots over par (599) entering Saturday's final round. Four strokes separate TCU and Florida, which currently occupies the final qualifying spot.

TCU's top individual performance came from junior Brooke Beeler (Butler, Ill.), who shot a 1-under 71 to finish in a tie for 32nd with seven others. Beeler has a 4-over-par 148 after two days of competition.

No. 3-ranked Alabama leads the tournament with a two-day total of 5-under-par 571. The Crimson Tide's Stephanie Meadows, who shot a 5-under 67 on Friday, holds the individual lead with a 6-under-par 138.

West Regional

Unranked BYU shot a 23-over-par 311 on Friday and finished in a tie for 11th place with Denver at the par-72, 6,266-yard Washington National Golf Course in Auburn, Wash. The Cougars are 38 shots over par through two rounds. BYU freshman Annika Afoa (Murray, Utah) led the team Friday with a 4-over 76 and is currently at 7-over par (151). BYU sophomore Kelsey Vines (St. George, Utah) is also 7-over for the tournament, after carding a 5-over-par 77 on Friday. Afoa and Vines are two of five players tied for 37th place.

The Cougars are joined in the West Regional by fellow MW members New Mexico and San Diego State. The Aztecs are currently 17th with a two-day total of 621, after posting a 23-over-par 311 on Friday. Junior Malin Enarsson (Gothenburg, Sweden) paced No. 48 SDSU for the second consecutive day, after carding a 5-over 77 in Round 2. Enarsson is currently 9-over 153 for the tournament to tie for 45th place with six others.

New Mexico, which has a two-day total of 628, shot a 30-over-par 318 and is 20th heading into Saturday's final round. Freshman Sammi Stevens (Hereford, Texas), who led the Lobos in Thursday's opening round, reprised that effort on Friday by shooting a 9-over-par 81. Stevens is 12 over par for the tournament.

Colorado State junior Brianna Espinoza (Phoenix, Ariz.), who received an at-large individual berth to the postseason, finished the second round with a 2-over-par 74. Espinoza began play on Friday tied for 104th and has since climbed to a tie for 63rd place.

USC, ranked No. 1 in the nation, leads the tournament with a two-day total of 4-under-par 572. No other school in the 22-team field is under par. The top individual score belongs to Tennessee's Erica Popson, who shot a 3-under 69 on Friday and has a two-day total of 7-under-par 137. Texas A&M and Oregon currently share the final qualifying spot at 27 over par with a two-day total of 603.

Central Regional

No. 44 UNLV shot a 37-over-par 325 on Friday at the par-72, 6,208-yard Warren Golf Course in South Bend, Ind.

Making their ninth straight regional appearance, the Rebels are currently 22nd in the 24-team field after two rounds of play.

Senior Therese Koelbaek (Holte, Denmark), turned in UNLV's top individual performance for the second straight day. The 2011 Mountain West Player of the Year carded a 4-over-par 76 on Friday and is nine shots over par (153) to tie for 39th place heading into Saturday's final round.

No. 2-ranked UCLA leads the tournament with a 16-over-par 592. The individual leader is Arkansas' Emily Tubert with an even-par 144.

BYU Women's Golf Team Tied for 7th After First Round of NCAA West Regional

The NCAA Women's Regional Golf Championships got underway at three sites across the country on Thursday. Participants will play a total of 54 holes, including 18 holes each day. Regional action concludes Saturday, when eight teams and two individuals will advance from each site to the NCAA National Championships at the Traditions Club in Bryan, Texas, May 17-20.

• West Regional

Unranked BYU shot a 15-over-par 303 and finished the opening round in a three-way tie (Arizona, South Carolina) for seventh place at the par-72, 6,266-yard Washington National Golf Course in Auburn, Wash.

Fellow MW members New Mexico and San Diego State join Tulsa in three-way tie for 14th place with a 22-over-par 310.

BYU, which finished third at the Mountain West Championship in April, is paced by sophomore Kelsey Vines (St. George, Utah), who shot a 2-over-par 74 to finish the round in a 10-way tie for 17th place. Meanwhile, Cougar freshman Annika Afoa (Murray, Utah) is tied with 14 other golfers for 27th place after carding a 3-over-par 75.

Unranked New Mexico is led by freshman Sammi Stevens (Hereford, Texas), who posted a 3-over-par 75 in Round 1 join BYU's Afoa and 12 others for 27th place. San Diego State junior Malin Enarsson (Gothenburg, Sweden) posted the 48th-ranked Aztecs' low round of the day and is in a 13-way tie for 42nd with a 4-over-par 76.

Having received an at-large individual berth to the postseason, Colorado State junior Brianna Espinoza (Phoenix, Ariz.) carded a 10-over 82 on the day to tie for 109th.

USC, the No. 1 team in the country, leads the tournament after shooting an even-par 288.

•East Regional

TCU, which captured the 2011 Mountain West championship, posted a 14-over-par 302 to finish in a tie for 11th at the par-72, 6,271-yard Legends Course at LPGA International in Daytona, Fla. The 33rd-ranked Horned Frogs enter Friday's second round tied with Auburn, Augusta State and Vanderbilt.

TCU's top individual performance on Thursday came from senior Prisela Campbell (Fort Worth, Texas), who shot a 2-over-par 74 to finish the round in a tie for 32nd with six others.

Horned Frog senior Melissa Loh (Singapore) carded a 3-over-par 75 and is currently tied with 17 others for 39th place.

No. 49 Coastal Carolina paces the field after finishing the first day of action with a 2-under 286.

•Central Regional

MW Trio Earns Trip to NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships

Three Mountain West student-athletes, including the MW Men's and Women's Player of the Year award recipients, will compete in the NCAA Singles and Doubles Tennis Championships May 25-30 at the Taube Tennis Center in Stanford, Calif., following the conclusion of the team championships on May 24.

UNLV men's player Mehdi Bouras (22-11), the MW's highest-ranked singles player at No. 72 in nation, is the first Rebel men's player to earn a spot in the NCAA singles field since Elliot Wronski in 2007. He will also pair with teammate Bernard Schoeman in the doubles competition. Bouras and Schoeman are 13-8 overall in doubles, boast three wins over top-20 opponents this spring and are the first UNLV doubles team to reach the national tournament since Nenad Zivkovic and Gregor Skorin in 1999.

On the women's side, the MW's automatic qualifying slot was filled by Utah junior Anastasia Putilina, who went 2-0 in singles and 3-0 in doubles last week in helping lead the Utes to their first Mountain West title. Putilina (25-13), a native of Belgorod, Russia, is currently ranked 49th in the nation.

Singles and doubles matchups will be released just prior to the tournament.

NCAA Women's Golf Regional Action Starts Today

Five teams and one individual from the Mountain West are set to begin their postseason bids in the 2011 NCAA Women's Golf Regionals, which start today. The MW is represented in the West Regional in Auburn, Wash., by BYU, New Mexico and San Diego State, as well as Colorado State's Brianna Espinoza. UNLV is competing in the Central Regional in Notre Dame, Ind., while conference champion TCU will tee off in the East Regional in Daytona Beach, Fla.

The BYU men's and Utah women's teams earned the league's automatic bids by winning their respective titles at the Mountain West Championships last week in Fort Collins, Colo.

The UNLV women's team will be participating in the NCAA tournament after receiving an at-large invitation.

BYU, ranked No. 35, will travel to Los Angeles to take on No. 31 San Diego at USC on May 13. With a mark of 21-5 overall and 6-0 in Mountain West play, the Cougars haven't lost a regular-season conference match since 2009. BYU faced San Diego in January, losing to the Toreros 6-1. San Diego is 18-6 overall.

The No. 49-ranked Utah women's team (16-9) will face No. 26 Alabama (15-6) in the first round on Saturday, May 14, in Athens, Ga. The Crimson Tide received an at-large bid after finishing fourth in the Southeastern Conference with an 8-3 record. The Utes are making back-to-back NCAA tournament appearances for the first time since qualifying three consecutive times from 1996-98.

No. 39-ranked UNLV (20-5), the 2011 Mountain West regular-season champion, will travel to the Los Angeles Tennis Center to face No. 29 San Diego (18-5) on Saturday, May 14. The Lady Rebels, who finished 8-0 in MW play, are making their fifth consecutive NCAA appearance. It is UNLV's eighth NCAA trip in the last 10 years. UNLV and USD have met 10 times, including the Lady Rebels' 5-2 victory in Las Vegas on Feb. 20, 2010. The schools met once before in NCAA play as host USD took a 5-4 first-round win in 1997.
